Pokémon: The Crown Tundra // Carrot Cake

You know the saying comparison is the thief of joy? It's true and I’m actually trying not to compare myself and what I’m doing to others….but as many of you’ll probably know, it’s hard. And it’s even harder not to compare if you play two DLCs of the same game back to back. If you read my post about “The Isle of Armor'' you know that I actually really enjoyed that mini expansion, which came as a surprise. So I went on my journey to “The Crown Tundra'' with quite a chunk of optimism. New legendary Pokémon, a tournament against all the gym leaders of the Galar Region, new Pokémon-Forms and more. Sounds fun! Could have been fun, if it didn’t feel so horrendously slow. Seriously, the human characters are honestly pretty interesting. Peony and his daughter Peonia had a lot of potential, but for me it all went out the window with the introduction of Calyrex. That weirdly big brained bunny is one of the rare Pokémon that can communicate with humans, but I wish he couldn’t. If I have to hear about his trusty steed one more time I’m going to scream. So much useless walking and talking, so much obvious lore that I wasn’t interested in at all. Make the quests to hunt the new legendaries more intriguing, give the villagers some interesting dialogue, anything, just: No. More. Rabbit. I usually enjoy grindy tasks in Pokémon games: collecting legendaries and hunting shinies. So I thought I’d like this DLC because it’s all about scavenger hunts, but it just lacks some depth. It feels so slow and yet it’s over, before you know it. And you never really feel involved. AN example: Peony wants to go on an adventure with you as a stand-in for his unwilling daughter, which could be interesting, but he mostly ends up sitting around his cabin. Maybe he’s just too busy playing ventriloquist dummy for Calyrex.

After the first DLC my trip to the crown tundra sadly turned out to be a disappointment. The experience actually felt very similar to the main game, so I guess if you enjoyed that you might have a better time with this mini expansion than I had. But hey, it’s not all bad! Calyrex feeds his “trusty steed” with shadow or ice carrots. I only have the normal variety, but they turn into the most luscious carrot cake you can imagine!
